Two engagement shapes
A fixed six-to-eight week sprint that ends in a handoff, or a retained residency that stays through production. You will run both.
End to end, no handoff
There is no DevOps team to pass it to and no QA behind you. You build it, demo it, iterate on the feedback, and get it accepted.
Position Overview
Most engineering roles are one-to-many: build something that serves ten thousand users. This one is the opposite. You build the thing that solves the problem for one specific customer, in their environment, on their constraints. It is consultant, product manager and engineer in a single seat, and the end output is always software rather than a recommendation.
Key Responsibilities
Run discovery: The main communication skill here is listening. What a client reports is usually the symptom: slow dashboards are rarely a dashboard problem. Earn enough trust that they surface the problem that actually matters.
Triage what gets built: Once clients start naming problems they do not stop. Choose on highest impact for them against cheapest for us to reach, and defend the choice.
Build in their environment: Connectors, integrations and workflows, in their stack and their accounts. Non-production first, always.
Set the boundaries before automating: Decide which decisions must stay with a human, and document guardrails and misuse modes as a deliverable rather than an afterthought.
Get it accepted: The bar is not that the code is good. It is that the thing works, the client understands it works, and it produces the outcome they paid for.
Qualifications
Senior engineering experience: You have shipped and operated production systems, and can be trusted alone in a client's environment.
Executive-grade communication: You can explain a technical trade-off to a non-technical sponsor and hold the room while you do it.
Judgment about scope: You scope less than the window holds, because you know the first version will need changing and the iteration is where acceptance is won.
AI systems in production: Agent orchestration, retrieval, and evaluation, plus the discipline of pushing work down from agents into deterministic code.
Presence, remotely: The role is fully remote, but discovery is not a chat window: you run live sessions with client stakeholders and hold the room across a screen.
